Emergencies
All out of hours services from 1st September 2004 have become the responsibility of the Newcastle and North Tyneside Primary Care Trust. All patients can access this service between the hours of 6.30 pm and 8am, Mondays to Fridays and all day and night Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays by first ringing the surgery.
Alternatively the patient line for the Out of Hours service is 0300 123 43 43
Surgery number: (0191) 2814777
If you decide to ring the surgery first, have a pencil and paper available as there are a number of telephone numbers to consider, including NHS Direct as well as the out of hours service number. Any comments about this service should be made directly to the PCT as they are for the first time since the inception of the NHS in 1948, legally responsible for this service.
Out of hours centre 0300 123 43 43 (from 9.10.2008)
There are two out of hours centres in Newcastle to which our patients have access. The one operated by the Primary Care Trust subcontracts the out of hours to "Northern Doctors". The present address for this organisation is Northumberland House, 1 Gosforth Park Avenue, Gosforth Business Park, NE12 8EG. The delay in seeing a doctor at the out of hours centre depends upon the urgency of the problem and this will be assessed by a doctor. If required, transport can be arranged free to attend the centre. A large number of our out of hours calls are seen at this centre.
The Walk-in Centre on the Newcastle General Site on the West Road has open access. That means that a patient can attend without prior notice. Unfortunately this also means that there can be a considerable wait for non urgent cases. It is not open 24 hours a day and a phone call might be advisable before attending although not strictly necessary.
In addition to these two centres, the Minor Injury Unit at the RVI (the old casualty department) is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
