FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is it called 'On The Day'?

Our aim is provide an "On The Day" (OTD) service where patients can easily get an appointment the same day and get high quality medical care. The 'On the Day' team is run by different Stowhealth Doctors and Nurses on a Rota basis. We cannot therefore guarantee your  access to the clinician of your choice within this service.

Can I still see my own Doctor?

Yes. If you wish to see your own doctor you can book a 'routine' face to face or telephone appointment . Appointments are normally available within 10 working days and are offered upto at least 8 weeks.

How do I know if I need an 'on the day' or 'routine' appointment?

Use your judgement. Can your problem wait for a 'routine' appointment with your own doctor? Do you think you need continuity of care with the same clinician? Do you need more time with the GP you feel knows you best? If you're not sure ask for an 'on the day' appointment and discuss it with the OTD team.

Do I have to call at 8.00 am?

No. Receptionists answer the phone ALL DAY, so avoid the rush and phone late morning or early afternoon, your enquiry will still be dealt with that day including same day consultations

What if I'm taking the children to school and can't wait by the phone for the return call by the On-The-Day-Team?

We will try to give you a rough idea of when we will call, obviously if this is difficult please tell us a time which would be convenient. Of course the nature of medicine means we may not be able to stick to this exactly but we will do our best. The more flexible you can be, the easier it will be for us to help you. If your phone does not receive withheld numbers, please inform the receptionist when making your appointment/enquiry, we will also call your mobile if you prefer.

What if I want a visit?

Home Visit request are organised by the 'On the Day' team, who will telephone you to discuss your needs and will arrange a Home Visit as necessary.

Can I just walk in and be seen?

We would prefer you telephone first so that we can deal with all enquiries on the basis of clinical priority. This will save you having to wait longer than you may feel necessary.

What if I have a minor injury or am bleeding?

Still telephone first so that the 'On The Day Team' can advise you where and when you can be best treated. More complex wounds may need to attend hospital or the Riverside Clinic, 2 Landsear Road, Ipswich. Minor injuries will be treated at Stowhealth
