Vomiting

The stomach doesn't always tolerate what it takes in. The quickest way to the stomach to eject whatever is bothering it is straight back up again!

Causes

Vomiting usually suggests inflammation of the stomach which is caused by an infection. However, sometimes vomiting may be caused by contaminated food.

If you are vomiting and also have stomach cramps and diarrhoea, these are sure signs that you have some kind of viral infection (gastroenteritis). Symptoms usually start to improve after 24 hours.

Treatment

It is best at first to let the stomach try to recover by not drinking or eating anything. Then, slowly start sipping some water to see how the stomach reacts.

If If this is successful, switch slowly to soup then up to solid foods. Try to avoid dairy products or fatty foods.

Prevention

Check the best before dates on all food and drinks. There is no way to prevent a viral infection so just rest as much as possible and wait for the symptoms to pass.

Seek medical advice

Seek advice from your healthcare professional if...

  • if symptoms persist after 24 hours
  • you are pregnant and have been vomiting continuously for 24 hours
  • you have abdominal pains that keep getting worse
  • there is blood in your vomit
