Safe sex

Hepatitis B and HIV (Human Immuno-deficiency Virus)(AIDS) are risks in all parts of the world, to varying degrees, and can be transmitted sexually.

Casual sex is risky. Always use a condom, but remember that they provide good, but not 100% protection.

Causes

HIV (AIDS) can be passed by:

  • Unprotected sex with an infected person
  • Sharing needles with an infected person
  • A blood transfusion with infected blood
  • Infected medical and dental equipment
  • An infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, at birth or by breastfeeding

Prevention

  • Avoid casual sex
  • Always use a condom
  • Avoid unnecessary medical and dental treatment - if you need a blood transfusion ask for screened blood
  • Do not inject drugs or share needles and syringes
  • Avoid having a tattoo, acupuncture or piercings
