Sprains

Sprains and strains often a occur during everyday tasks or whilst playing sport. Sprains happen when a ligament is damaged. Ligaments are the tissues that attach bones and give support to joints.

Symptoms

The area will become inflamed, swollen and some bruising may occur. It will probably be very difficult to move the joint.

Treatment

Firstly apply a cold compress, containing ice if possible, for 15 to 30 minutes to reduce the swelling.

Firmly apply a crepe bandage and give the sprain plenty of rest until all discomfort has subsided. Further strain will inevitably lead to further swelling and a longer recovery period.

Prevention

  • warm up before sport and exercise
  • use good quality footwear

Seek medical advice

Seek advice from your healthcare professional if...

  • you think you may have broken a bone
  • you cannot walk
  • bruising is severe
