Prescriptions

If you do not order your prescription online, we prefer repeat prescription requests to be in writing, usually on the repeat prescription list which would have been returned with your previous months medication. Tick the box [ ] to the right hand side of the drug name. If you do not tick any of the boxes, we will not run your prescription as we will not know what you need, so please ensure you fill out the repeat slip, even if you are needing all of your medication. If the repeat slip states you need to book an appointment for reviews, you will need to make an appointment with your doctor before more repeats are issued.

Prescriptions are available after 48 hours. You will not be able to collect your prescription before then, unless it is an emergency.

Acute Prescriptions

If you need medication that is not on a repeat but you have previously had it in the past, we may be able to issue a prescription. If you let reception know what the medication is called, and when you have previously had it, then we can ask your GP without you needing an appointment.

If you have recently had your medication changed at a hospital visit, your records may not have been updated as a letter takes time to arrive at the surgery so contact with reception would be needed to confirm that the new medication has been added to your list (and just as important that the old medicine deleted if appropriate). This may not be available until after 48 hours as your record will need to be amended by your GP so please ensure you let us know as soon as possible.

Dispensary

We have a dispensary at both sites for patients who live more than a mile away from a Pharmacy.  If you are unsure if we can dispense for you please ask at reception or the dispensary.  Both dispensaries are open for the same hours as the surgery.  There is a delivery service at both sites, please enquire at the dispensary for more information.

Prescription charges

Standard prescription charge per item - £8.40

Prepayment certificates are available if you have many prescription items and application forms are available from the Dispensary and all local chemists or by visiting the Prescription Pricing Authority Website at http://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/1127.aspx
These prescription charges are valid from the 1st of April 2016.

Dosset Boxes

If you find it difficult to remember what medications to take and when to take them we can dispense them in dosset boxes for you.  The tablets are dispensed in a box which consists of each day which is broken down into four sections, the tablets are put into the appropriate section of the box so it is easy to check if you have taken your tablets or not.  If you would like to try this system please speak to your Dispenser who will be happy to help.  There is no obligation to continue with the system if you decide you would rather go back to the old system.

Medication Review

Any patient who has one or more item on their repeat list, will need a medication review with their GP every 6 or 12 months. This is compulsory and if your medication review is due, you will need to book an appointment with the GP of your choice. It  will say on your repeat slip when your medication review is due so you will be able to book this in advance. If your medication review is due, however there isn't an appointment with your GP until after your review date, you will still be able to get your prescription as long as you have booked an appointment, even if it is a few weeks after your review date. Urgent same day appointment must not be used for a medication review.

Generic Policy

Every drug has 2 names. It can be very confusing. For example NUROFEN is a trade name or marketing name, the generic or chemical name is IBUPROFEN. Similarly PANADOL and PARACETAMOL. It is Government policy to increase the rate of generic prescribing. The Practice took the decision to prescribe generically, where possible, for all drugs some time ago. Our generic prescribing rate is over 75%. It does mean some of the drug names are almost unpronounceable - it's as difficult for doctors and dispensers as it is for patients!
