Breast Screening

Mammography (taking x-rays of breast tissue) is organised from outside the practice.

Screening takes place every 3 years in women aged 50-70. The Department of Health does not currently fund the routine screening of women below the age of 50 (effectively pre-menopausal women). Screening is difficult in women who still have periods because the breast tissue changes with the monthly cycle. Nevertheless, it does advocate screening women who have a first degree relative who has had breast cancer (i.e. mother or a sister) from 5 years before the age at which the relative was diagnosed.

Nicotine replacement such as Patches, Gum, Champix and Zyban can be given free if you are exempt from prescription charges. One in two smokers that use this service quit smoking.

Medical examinations for insurance policies, HGV or PSV drivers, elderly drivers, sub-aqua purposes etc, can be arranged by appointment. As these invariably do not come under your doctor's terms of NHS service, a fee will be charged. Please ring reception and we will do our best to arrange this for you.

New Patient Consultations

Every patient registering with the practice will have the opportunity of a new patient consultation. The appointment gives you a chance to meet us, have your health checked and bring to light any ongoing medical problems or important past medical history, including continuing your medication.

Your appointment will usually be with a practice nurse.

We will ask you about the following:

  • Your past medical history (important illnesses and operations)
  • Ongoing medical problems
  • Medication
  • Family history
  • You will have your blood pressure taken and your urine will be tested. Occasionally other examinations or tests may be done if needed.

Private Forms

Your doctor will usually be able to complete any Private Forms or sign passport forms (if they have known you for more than two years), but please allow a minimum of seven working days notice. A charge for these - and for issuing private certificates - will be made in line with the recommended BMA scale

Test Results

Please remember if you have a blood test or other investigation, it is your responsibility to enquire with the practice about the result. Please phone for test results preferably during the afternoon between 3.00pm and 5.00pm

The time interval for telephoning for results is:

Blood tests seven working days
X-rays/ US 7-10 working days
Cervical Smear test six weeks

The doctor will advise you if the interval is significantly different. To maintain confidentiality, results will only be given to patients in person or to parents if the patient is under 16
