111 - The new out-of-hours service
If you need medical help fast but it's not an emergency call 111, if it's a life-threatening emergency call 999.

NHS 111 is the number to call when you need medical help fast but it's not a life-threatening emergency. Calls to 111 are FREE from landlines and mobiles and is available 24/7, every day of the year.

When to call 111
You should call 111 when:

you think you need to go to A&E or to another NHS urgent care service

your GP surgery is closed and you need healthcare advice

you don't know who to call for medical help

When to call 999
Call 999 for life threatening emergencies such as:

Major accident or trauma
Severe breathlessness
Severe bleeding
Loss of consciousness
Severe chest pain

Emergencies

If you have a medical emergency between 8:00 am - 6:30 pm Monday - Friday call the surgery and you will be put through to speak with a doctor as soon as possible.

Out-of-hours care

If you need urgent medical attention out of normal surgery hours please telephone the surgery on 0191 2236555 and you will be transferred automatically to the Out-of-Hours Service NHS 111 OR you can dial 111 directly free of charge. 

Do I really need to contact a doctor?

Please only use the out-of-hours service if your medical condition is such that you cannot possibly wait until the surgery opens again. The provision of an out-of-hours service costs local health authorities a lot of money and its resources are stretched by inappropriate use and patients who really need attention might have to wait longer.
