Hypertension

Hypertension is the term used to describe high blood pressure. The British Hypertension Society defines raised blood pressure as above the reading of 160/90.

Risks

 

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for strokes and heart attacks and affects approximately 15% of the UK adult population. It is treatable and studies have shown that if treated the incidence of heart attacks and strokes are reduced. Associated risk factors are smoking, raised cholesterol and lipids and diabetes.

Causes

 
  • Obesity
  • Excessive Alcohol Consumption
  • Poor Diet
  • Stress
  • Lack of exercise
  • Smoking

Prevention

 
  • Watch your weight
  • Limit alcoholic drinks
  • Eat a low fat, high fibre diet. Reduce salt intake
  • Avoid stressful situations and learn to relax more
  • Take regular exercise
  • Give up smoking
